Lying Demonstration Lesson Plan
2nd Experimental Lyceum of Athens
Grade: 2 groups of 2nd classes of Lyceum (45 students)
Purpose: To learn new vocabulary, practice group work and reaching a consensus after discussion, making moral decisions
Explain to the class that today’s theme is lying
Step 1: Warm-up exercise (5 minutes): Ask the following questions
1. Why do people lie? When do we lie most often? What do we lie about?
2. Do you think that lying is justified in some situations? Why?
3. Can lying be harmless?
4. Is not telling the whole truth the same as lying?
Step 2 (5minutes): Ask the students if they know what a lie detector test is. Explain to the students that they will see the lie detector test scene from the movie “Meet the Parents” but before they do this, they will be given the dialogue to put in order as group work. Hand out cut up dialogue and tell them to look at each strip for unknown vocabulary and explain. Then have they put it in the correct order. JIGSAW DIALOGUE exercise.docx (13,8 kB)
Step 3 (5 minutes): Watch the clip and then correct the order. Make sure they do not re-arrange the strips while they are watching. Correct after watching by having 2 people read.
Step 4 (15 minutes): Hand out group work sheet and explain the instructions. The students should read each situation and decide what they would in each case and justify their answers. They must reach a consensus because each event occurs when they are together. One person should be put in charge of coordination and another should write the answers down.
Situation 1: You are at The Mall and have found $10,000 on the shelf beneath an ATM machine and nobody saw you find it. What would you do?
Situation 2: You are out for a walk one night and you see a man running towards you. He looks terrified, stressed and panicked. He comes up to you with tears in his eyes and says, “I am going to hide right here. I can’t run anymore. I didn’t do anything wrong. Please, promise me you won’t tell them where I am!” So you promise the man, he hides behind a bush and you keep walking.
Ten seconds later four men turn the corner where the panicked man had come from and head towards you. As they get closer you see that they are, indeed, police officers. They walk up to you and ask if you have seen the man they were chasing. What do you do? Do you lie? Why?
Situation 3: A friend of yours gives you each an expensive present but you later find out it was stolen. What would you all do?
Situation 4: A friend from your group decided to make big changes to his appearance. He dyed his hair purple and is wearing bright orange clothes. He looks horrible. When he asks all of you what you think, should you tell him the truth?
Step 5(10 minutes): Listen to each group’s answer. Every student should be given the opportunity to speak.

Exercise 2) Write a sentence for each expression
